Best suspended fireplace NZ outdoor: 10 things to consider before you buy

Most suspended fireplaces are made for indoor use, so check the manufacturer's rating before you hang one outside. In our range, the Iconic 900 and Planika Pillar are rated indoor only, and Cocoon says the stainless Cocoon models can be used outside if they are stored inside and out of rain and salt air. Talk to us about any Naked Flame form for a covered outdoor room.

10 things to consider before you buy

  1. The outdoor rating. Confirm the exact model and finish is rated for outdoor use. Painted finishes are generally indoor only.
  2. Cover and weather. Rain, salt air and wind affect both the flame and the finish. A roofed, sheltered area is far better than open sky.
  3. Wind. Bioethanol flames move with the wind. A covered alfresco room with some walls gives a steadier flame.
  4. Storage. A fire you can take down or store inside between uses lasts longer near the coast.
  5. The structure overhead. A hanging fire needs framing that can carry it. Naked Flame forms need 350 kg; the Cocoon Aeris weighs 13.5 kg.
  6. Fuel. Bioethanol needs no gas line or chimney. Gas and wood need a flue and the right trades.
  7. Clearances. Keep furniture, umbrellas and fabric well clear. Naked Flame forms need at least 150 mm all round and the base at least 500 mm above the floor.
  8. Local rules and fire-season restrictions. Check with your council, especially for wood.
  9. Finish. Stainless steel stands up to the elements better than painted steel. Corten weathers by design.
  10. A floor option. If there is nothing overhead to hang from, a freestanding fire such as the Cocoon Pedestal stands on the floor.
