Suspended Fireplaces for Pitched and Raked Ceilings in NZ
Yes, a suspended fireplace can hang from a raked ceiling. The fitting, the structure and the fires that suit tall spaces.
Yes, a suspended fireplace can hang from a pitched or raked ceiling. Every Naked Flame form has an angled ceiling fitting, which adds NZ$1,000, and the Cocoon Aeris has an angled ceiling bracket. The ceiling framing must carry 350 kg, and the flue is cut so the fire hangs at the height you want.
What changes on a pitched ceiling
- The fitting. An angled fitting replaces the flat ceiling plate so the flue hangs plumb. Tell us the pitch in degrees when you ask for a quote.
- The flue length. On a high raked ceiling the 219 mm flue can be long, and it weighs about 16 kg a metre, so the load adds up.
- The fixing point. The bracket fixes into the framing, not the lining. A builder or engineer should confirm the rafters or add blocking or a beam above the fire position.
Planning checklist
- Measure the ceiling pitch and the height at the fire position.
- Choose where the fire sits, keeping at least 150 mm clear all the way round.
- Set the fire height, with the base at least 500 mm above the floor.
- Confirm the framing can carry 350 kg.
- Choose the fuel: gas and wood need a flue through the roof, bioethanol and electric do not.
Which fires suit a raked ceiling
- Curve 120: the largest form at 1,210 mm, for big double-height rooms of 110 m³ or more.
- Silo and Orbit: 900 mm forms with a strong vertical line that suits tall spaces.
- Sphere: 700 mm and 46 kg, the lightest Naked Flame form.
- Cocoon Aeris: 13.5 kg on a slim pole with an angled bracket and extension poles.
- Iconic 900: hangs on 127 mm poles extended to as much as 2,542 mm overall.
Common questions
Does a raked ceiling stop the fire rotating?
No. Bioethanol, wood and electric Naked Flame fires still turn 360 degrees. Gas versions are fixed on any ceiling.
Can you fit one to an existing raked ceiling?
Usually, once a builder confirms the framing. Bioethanol and electric are the simplest retrofits because they need no roof flue.
